Job hunt stickies

Because I followed several different places for job postings, I found I was occasionally getting halfway through an application before realizing I'd already applied for that job. So I started tracking job apps on lined sticky notes (8 lines per sticky) and keeping them near my computer so I could easily see which ones I'd applied to. If I got a turn-down, I'd usually scribble out the school, although sometimes I forgot. And if I got at least to phone interview, I'd put a checkmark or something. And, as you can probably make out, a big green oval around the job I finally got.

Now, I applied to several jobs before starting this log, and I forget exactly how many, but the upshot is that it took about a hundred applications over the course of nearly two years to land a one-year position. And I avoided applying for jobs where it looked like I had zero chance, too. Tells you something about the market for physics professors in fields that don't involve loads of grant money....
